Road Safety Engagement Results

Thank you for taking part in our recent public engagement exercise to have your say on the refreshed Road Safety Strategy. We are pleased to share the below results:

Opinion on Road Safety:

Overall respondents were more likely to feel unsafe rather than safe when using the road network. 41% of respondents felt very unsafe/unsafe, with just 24% feeling safe/very safe. Those who frequently cycled/scooted felt most unsafe (71%), followed by those who walked (50%).

Opinion on 'Vision Zero':

The vast majority of respondents agreed with the adoption of ‘Vision Zero’ as a long-term mission (88%). Those who cycle/scoot (97%) or walk/ wheel (95%) were most likely to agree. Frequent car users were least likely to agree (82%).

Opinion on working together:

The overwhelming majority of respondents agreed that TfWM and Local Authorities should work together on improving road safety across the region (95%).

Opinion on road safety target:

Fewer than half of participants (48%); were happy/satisfied with the target of a 50% reduction in the number of killed and serious injured casualties by 2030, 20% were unhappy/dissatisfied with the target. Those who cycle/scoot were most likely to be unhappy/dissatisfied with the target (33%).

Role as road users:

Respondents were most likely to feel their role as a road user was to watch out for vulnerable road users (83%), reduce distractions e.g. mobile phone use (78%) and/or drive within the speed limit (77%). Few thought their role was to attend education or training. Cyclist/scooter users were most likely to feel their role was to watch out for vulnerable road users (92%).

Suggestions for behaviour change:

The top suggestions to encourage behaviour change (which would lead to using roads more safely), were more off road cycling and walking facilities (73%), increased funding and incentives to use public transport and active modes (62%) and greater use of enforcement powers (51%). Walkers and cyclists were most likely to want more off road cycling and walking facilities.

We will now use the results of the survey to consider final changes to the Refreshed Regional Road Safety Strategy 2023-2030. Once finalised, the aim is to launch the document in September 2023. Alongside this, the Regional Road Safety Partnership will formulate an evidence-based action plan aimed at delivering the Refreshed Strategy, targeting improvements in accordance with Vision Zero and the target of a 50% reduction in the number of people killed or seriously injured by 2030.
